Drone attack and fire around Dubai International Airport disrupt international travel; restricted operations are resumed after the security checks.
On Monday, international carrier Emirates has temporarily cancelled flights inbound and bound Dubai as a safety mechanism under precaution after a security incident near the Dubai international airport. This interruption was occasioned by a drone attack which led to a blaze near the airport that made the governments pause flight services and scope the situation before resuming operations albeit with limited services later in the day.
The event took place in the early morning of Monday and is said to have happened after a drone attack attacked a fuel tank in the area near the airport leading to a fire that was seen to take several hours. The fire was contained very early by emergency response teams and officials testified that not a single casualty was reported. But just in case, the authorities of the airports suspended all the flights on one of the most active aviation groups in the world.
Emirates the main carrier of Dubai reacted to the disturbance by indicating that it had ended all its outbound and inbound flights pending further notice as the government assessed the security conditions. The airline encouraged passengers not to come to the airport and instead to keep track of the airline on the status of their flights.
The abrupt suspension upset thousands of passengers in several continents, since Dubai is a major transit point between Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. A number of flights were cancelled or diverted to other airlines within the region including the Al Maktoum International Airport.
Among the affected flights was an Emirates flight between Kochi, India and when it had to turn back a few minutes after takeoff, Dubai had announced airspace restrictions. The same was reported in most of the routes between Dubai and major cities in the world.
Other airlines that used Dubai also suffered because the airspace was temporarily closed disrupting the flight schedule in the region. The coordination of aviation authorities and the carriers to handle the diversions and reduce the effects to passengers was done.
It is supposed that the drone attack that happened close to the airport is linked to the increasing tensions in the Middle East. Reportedly the attack was a part of a series of the attacks that were connected to the conflict between Iran and its local rivals.
Security analysts observe that there has been an escalation of drone and missile attacks in recent weeks by Gulf countries on infrastructure and strategic points. The accident at the airport of Dubai is one of the biggest attack against civilian infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates since the level of escalation has increased.
Although the scale of the event was tremendous UAE officials have added that the blaze was contained before long and emergency measures worked well. Emergency teams were also responding to the situation by temporarily closing roads leading to the airport.
Once the situation was stabilised and safety checks have been conducted, Emirates released a statement that it would start a restricted flight schedule around 10.00 am local time. The airline indicated that flight cancellations or delays would continue to affect some flights as things did resume their normal course.
The disrupted passengers were given choice of rebooking their flights or refunding. Emirates recommended that passengers should be in a position to see the status of their latest flight online before visiting the airport.
Dubai aviation authorities also reported that the flights would resume slowly as the security and working conditions will improve. Airlines are engaging with the authorities to maintain safe and orderly travel and are also keeping track of the emerging situation in the region.
Government have advised passengers who are set to pass through Dubai to be on top of their boards and keep in touch with their airlines to get updates. It is recommended that travelers check the status of their flights before to rushing to airport and create time to allow delays.
The operations have started recovering but the situation is not stable yet and airlines can change the schedules basing on the security assessment and the airspace conditions.
The accident emphasises the susceptibility of the aviation infrastructure worldwide to regional disputes and the relevance of the coordinated safety aspects to safeguard passengers and aviation crew members. As the investigation on the drone attack goes on; authorities have reiterated their promise to provide the security of the travelers and security of international air travel.
